framing stain glass windows

Hello, we have stain glass windows in our church that do not have a window frame around them. The question is, when we frame the windows should they be framed in a picture frame mode or how, and should they be stained dark or painted an off white like the walls. Would appreciate some help if possible. Thank you, June Hubbard
