Don't patina lead. Brushing with whiting after puttying darkens the lead the way it should be.

Clean zinc well before you patina. Fingernail polish works well for me. Wipe the patina on, don't scrub. Don't let a big puddle sit on the zinc. If you are putting patina on a zinc border of a lead panel, don't let the patina get on the putty.
